I'm planning an affordable upgrade for my aging gaming system. It currently has an Intel i5-12400F, ASRock B660M-HDV motherboard, 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 memory, a Corsair CX650M 650W PSU, and a Zotac GTX 1060 6GB. I want to replace the graphics card and add a 1TB NVMe SSD.
The GPU options and prices I'm considering are an RX 7700 XT 12GB for €475, RX 9060 XT 16GB for €520, RTX 5060 Ti 16GB for €680, and RTX 5070 12GB for €800. The 5070 seems too expensive for this build, and the 5060 Ti also looks difficult to justify at that price. I've had some minor AMD driver or compatibility issues in the past, so Nvidia's DLSS, frame generation, and ray-tracing features are appealing, although I'm unsure how valuable they are for my use case compared with better traditional rendering performance.
I mainly play Monster Hunter, especially Wilds, Palworld, No Man's Sky, Borderlands 4, Blizzard games such as WoW, Diablo, and Overwatch, plus occasional AAA releases. My target is 1080p, and I'm not particularly interested in 1440p.
Would the i5-12400F still be a reasonable match for these graphics cards, particularly in Monster Hunter Wilds? Which GPU offers the best value at these prices? I'm also considering a Silicon Power UD90 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive for about €140 and would like to know whether it is a sensible choice for this system. Finally, is the existing 650W PSU adequate, especially for the RX 7700 XT, or would a PSU replacement be advisable? I'm trying to avoid spending heavily on an old platform without seeing a worthwhile improvement.

The UD90 should work in the B660M system, but €140 seems high for a basic 1TB drive unless local pricing is unusually expensive. It will still be a major improvement over an HDD for boot and loading times. Compare it with other reputable PCIe 4.0 TLC or well-reviewed budget drives before buying, and make sure the motherboard’s M.2 slot is configured correctly and has a heatsink if available.
If you are willing to buy used, a Radeon RX 6800 XT could be worth checking because it offers strong performance and 16GB of VRAM. For a new purchase, the RX 9060 XT or possibly an RX 9070 if found near the price of the 5060 Ti would make more sense. I would not stretch to a higher-end card unless you plan to upgrade the CPU and platform later.
The RTX 5060 Ti at €680 is poor value compared with the AMD options, and the RTX 5070 at €800 is probably more performance than makes sense for this system and resolution. Nvidia features are useful if you specifically care about ray tracing, DLSS, or frame generation, but for mostly conventional 1080p gaming, the cheaper AMD card is likely to provide the better overall experience.
Your 650W PSU should be adequate for these cards as long as it is in good condition and has the required PCIe power connectors. Check the specific model’s power requirements and avoid overclocking if you choose a card with unusually high transient demands. The i5-12400F is still a decent pairing for 1080p, although Monster Hunter Wilds may be CPU-limited in busy areas regardless of which GPU you buy.
The RX 9060 XT 16GB looks like the strongest new-card value here. For 1080p it should be a very capable upgrade, and the extra VRAM is useful for newer games. The RX 7700 XT is also perfectly reasonable at €475, but the 9060 XT is the one I’d favor if the price and availability are genuine. AMD’s current drivers are generally much less troublesome than they used to be, and FSR has improved considerably, so DLSS alone probably isn’t worth paying the large premium for the RTX 5060 Ti.

That makes sense. I was concerned that moving to a much faster card would just leave me CPU-limited, especially at 1080p, so I’d rather keep the upgrade balanced than spend extra for performance I won’t consistently see.
