Which lightweight Linux distribution can run on an old Chromebook with very little storage?

I have an old Dell Chromebook that was headed for disposal, and ChromeOS reports roughly 1–2 GB of available storage. I'd like to install Linux if possible. Which lightweight distribution would fit, and are there any compatibility or bootloader issues I should check first?

The bigger issue may be whether the Chromebook can boot another operating system at all. Research the exact model to see whether its firmware or bootloader can be changed, since many Chromebooks require special steps and some cannot be converted easily. If possible, installing a larger SSD or booting from an SD card would give you far more practical choices.

If the device already runs ChromeOS acceptably, keeping it may be the simplest option. A lightweight Linux installation will not necessarily make very old hardware faster, especially with only around 1–2 GB of RAM.

First, confirm whether that number is total storage, free space, or RAM. Chromebooks commonly have more storage than ChromeOS makes available, and the full drive may be usable after replacing the operating system. Check the exact model and hardware specifications before choosing a distribution.

ChromeOS showed only a small amount in use and about 1.8 GB available, so the storage figure may be getting misread.

For genuinely tiny storage, look at distributions such as Tiny Core Linux, Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, or antiX. They can fit on very limited hardware, but the smallest options are more specialized and may not provide a comfortable everyday desktop. Use a lightweight browser rather than a memory-heavy one.
