My Windows SSD suddenly died, and I'm taking the opportunity to switch to Linux. I'm mainly looking for a distribution with good gaming performance out of the box, while still allowing me to explore and learn how Linux works instead of hiding or locking everything down. I'd prefer to avoid Snap packages if possible. I've only used Ubuntu briefly before, so I'd also appreciate advice about checking hardware, game compatibility, package formats, backups, and anything else I should know before installing. Most of my gaming is Minecraft on Hypixel. My hardware includes Intel Wi-Fi, an AMD graphics card, and an 8BitDo controller.

Don’t let the Snap issue determine everything. Some criticisms are fair, but similar tradeoffs exist with Flatpak; native packages are generally preferable when they’re available. The bigger thing to avoid is choosing an immutable or heavily locked-down system if your goal is to learn how Linux works, because changing the underlying system can be less straightforward.
