Which Linux Distribution Is Best for a Windows 11 Beginner Who Mainly Games?

I have never used Linux before and currently run Windows 11. My PC has a Ryzen 7 7700X, RTX 4070, 32 GB of DDR5 RAM, and I mainly use it for gaming. I also watch shows, use Discord, and occasionally do video or image editing. I'm considering Linux because I've heard it can feel faster and has less bloatware than Windows, but I want an easy setup with minimal command-line work. Ideally, the desktop should feel familiar to Windows so I can navigate it without much trouble. Which distribution would be the most practical choice, and what compatibility checks should I do before installing?

Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop is probably the smoothest transition from Windows. It has a familiar layout, is easy to install, and works well for general use and many games without needing a special gaming-focused distribution. Your hardware is more than powerful enough, so the distribution itself is unlikely to make a dramatic performance difference.

Fedora KDE Plasma is a good middle ground. KDE provides a familiar Windows-style interface, while Fedora generally offers newer software and drivers. Kubuntu is another similar option if you prefer a longer-term-support approach. CachyOS may offer useful gaming tweaks, but it is less ideal as a first Linux installation if simplicity matters more than small performance gains.

Before replacing Windows, try the desktop from a bootable USB without installing it. Check that the RTX 4070, Wi-Fi, audio, Bluetooth, displays, and any controllers work properly. You can also test distributions in a browser first. For games, check whether the titles and anti-cheat systems you use support Linux through Steam Proton; most games work well, but compatibility is not universal. Discord has a Linux app, although some Windows-only editing software may require alternatives or a virtual machine.

If gaming is your main priority, Bazzite with KDE Plasma is worth considering. KDE feels close to Windows, and Bazzite includes gaming-oriented setup and conveniences. It can be a little different from a traditional desktop distribution, though, so Mint or Fedora KDE may be less confusing if you want a conventional Linux experience.
