I'm tired of using Windows and want to switch to Linux, but I'm not sure which distribution to choose. My main priorities are gaming, watching streaming services and YouTube, and having the option to customize the desktop. Customization is a nice bonus rather than my top priority, so I'd prefer something reliable and beginner-friendly. What would you recommend, and is there a good way to try different distributions before installing one?

Linux Mint is probably the safest starting point. It’s stable, familiar to Windows users, easy to set up, and works well for everyday tasks like gaming and watching videos. Ubuntu is another dependable beginner-friendly option.
For a gaming-focused setup, take a look at Bazzite. It comes with many gaming tools configured already and is designed to be difficult to break, which is helpful when you’re new to Linux. The tradeoff is that its immutable design can make deeper customization less straightforward.
If you want something that feels especially familiar after leaving Windows, Zorin OS is worth considering. Pop!_OS, Ubuntu, and its different desktop flavors are also friendly choices. KDE Plasma on Fedora or CachyOS offers more customization, but those may involve a little more learning.
You can try most distributions without installing them by creating a bootable USB drive and starting the live environment. That lets you check hardware compatibility, graphics, Wi-Fi, multiple monitors, and the desktop layout first. A browser-based distro demo site can also help you compare interfaces, though it won’t test your actual hardware. Keep in mind that some Windows-only games and applications may still need alternatives or compatibility tools.
That sounds useful for gaming. I’ll have to decide whether the easier maintenance is worth giving up some flexibility.
