Which Linux Distribution Is Best for Practicing RHEL-Based Administration on a Laptop?

I'm moving into a database engineering role and will be building skills in areas like database administration, Kubernetes, Terraform, and related tooling. Since the work environment will be closest to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, I'm considering Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux for my personal laptop. How well do those distributions support laptop hardware and drivers, especially on a budget-friendly machine? Would Fedora Workstation be a better choice for newer hardware, or would Ubuntu or another distribution make more sense for learning and experimentation?

AlmaLinux is probably worth a look because it includes additional hardware enablement and drivers beyond what youโ€™d typically get with a strict RHEL-compatible setup. That can make it a little friendlier on newer or less common laptops while keeping the overall ecosystem familiar.

For most laptops, drivers are provided by the Linux kernel, so hardware age matters more than whether you choose Rocky, AlmaLinux, Fedora, or Ubuntu. Assuming the laptop doesnโ€™t depend on unusual proprietary hardware or software, one of the RHEL-compatible distributions should work fine. You can always test Wi-Fi, graphics, suspend, and audio with a live USB before installing.
