I impulse-bought a modern laptop during a sale and plan to use it mainly while traveling, so battery life is my biggest concern. I'm trying to decide whether Linux can match or improve on Windows battery life, since I've heard conflicting experiences.
My needs are fairly simple: use Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Docs in a browser such as Chrome or Brave; watch movies with VLC; use a reliable RDP client to remotely troubleshoot computers at home; and transfer camera photos to a TrueNAS system, currently through SMB and a drag-and-drop file manager workflow. I don't need gaming, photo or video editing, or other demanding workloads.
I initially considered Windows-like distributions such as Mint, Q4OS, and Zorin, but I'm now open to a cleaner break from Windows. Which distribution and desktop environment would be a good choice for a Linux beginner who wants dependable hardware support, straightforward file sharing and remote access, and the best practical battery life?

Mint is probably the easiest transition from Windows, but it’s worth testing before installing. Create a live USB, boot from it, and check battery drain, suspend, Wi-Fi, graphics, Bluetooth, video playback, and external displays on the actual laptop. You can install Chrome or another browser while testing. This gives you real results for your hardware instead of relying on general claims about one distribution being more efficient than another.
Windows often has an advantage because manufacturers tune power management specifically for it. Linux tools such as TLP and the desktop’s own power profiles can help, but the result varies by model. Some users see substantially longer runtime with Mint or Debian, while others get better results with Windows. For network storage, SMB is well supported on Linux; NFS may perform better in some setups, but it isn’t automatically faster across a high-latency connection. For remote support, Remmina, TeamViewer, or another cross-platform client can cover the usual Windows and Linux systems.
Fedora KDE is another good option if you want a polished desktop that still feels reasonably familiar. KDE offers plenty of features without requiring a minimalist interface. OpenSUSE can also work well for ordinary travel tasks. In practice, desktop choice and hardware support may matter more than the distribution name, especially on a recent laptop.
Linux battery life depends heavily on the laptop’s hardware, firmware, kernel, drivers, and power settings, so no distribution can guarantee better results than Windows. That said, Mint with the XFCE desktop is a sensible starting point: it’s lightweight, familiar enough for a beginner, and has straightforward graphical tools for installing software and managing power. Remmina can handle RDP, and TrueNAS shares can be accessed through the file manager over SMB. You could also use the TrueNAS web interface or a dedicated transfer tool if that suits your workflow better.
Your workload would also run comfortably on a lightweight Chromebook, provided the web apps and remote-access tools meet your needs. Since you already have the laptop, though, a live test of Mint, Debian, or Fedora is the best way to compare battery life. The battery capacity, CPU, display, and manufacturer firmware will usually make a bigger difference than the distribution alone.
