I'm looking for a Linux distribution that's easy to install and maintain but still gives me plenty of room to customize the desktop and learn how Linux works. I'm especially interested in experimenting with "ricing," so good desktop configuration options would be a plus. What would you recommend for a beginner?

Your desktop environment matters as much as the distribution. KDE Plasma is a strong choice for customization because it offers lots of built-in settings for themes, panels, widgets, shortcuts, and layouts. After choosing a desktop, compare distributions based on their package management and how much maintenance you want to handle.
CachyOS is a beginner-friendly option with a relatively easy installation and maintenance process. It can also be customized heavily, and as you learn more, you can gradually configure it to feel closer to a minimal Arch-based setup.
