I'm finishing a new PC build and only need to buy a graphics card before setting it up. I've used Windows for years because it came preinstalled on my computers, but I'd like to try a Linux-based operating system instead. Gaming is a major priority, and I also use SolidWorks 2026 for CAD work and plan to learn Blender. I'm not very experienced with Linux, so I'm looking for a beginner-friendly distribution that can handle both gaming and creative software without too many compatibility problems. I'm also concerned about background processes affecting performance, and I'm unsure whether my games and CAD tools will work properly on Linux.

Blender generally works well on Linux, and gaming support has improved a lot, but you need to check your specific games because multiplayer anti-cheat can still be a problem. SolidWorks is the bigger issue: it does not have a native Linux version, so you may need Windows in a dual-boot setup or a virtual machine. A beginner-friendly distribution such as Linux Mint or Ubuntu would be a reasonable place to start, but the software you depend on matters more than the distribution itself.
If SolidWorks 2026 is important for school or work, keeping Windows available is probably the safest choice. Blender and many games may run on Linux, but SolidWorks compatibility through Wine or similar tools is not something I’d rely on for serious projects. Dual-booting Linux and Windows gives you the best balance: use Linux for everyday tasks and compatible games, then boot Windows whenever you need SolidWorks or a game that does not support Linux.
For a first Linux installation, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, or Fedora are commonly recommended because they have good hardware support and lots of documentation. Before choosing, look up every game you play on a compatibility database and check whether your graphics card has proper Linux drivers. Also verify whether your CAD workflow depends on plugins or Windows-only tools, since those can be just as important as the main application.
Switching distributions will not make Windows-only software native to Linux. The main decision is whether you can replace SolidWorks or are willing to keep a Windows installation alongside Linux.

You can test Linux from a live USB or in a virtual machine before changing anything. That lets you check your hardware and get familiar with the desktop without removing Windows.
