Which Linux distribution would be easiest for my wife on an old laptop?

My wife needs a laptop, but we cannot afford a new one right now. I have an older laptop available, although Windows is using most of its limited performance and making it feel very slow. Neither of us is very experienced with software, so I'm looking for a Linux distribution that can make the laptop run better while remaining simple and low-maintenance for everyday tasks like browsing, documents, and spreadsheets. What would you recommend?

The best choice depends on what the laptop needs to do and how old it is. For basic online activities, Mint should be fine. On genuinely weak hardware, a lightweight desktop such as XFCE will make a bigger difference than choosing between distributions. It is also worth testing the system from a live USB before installing, so you can check that the Wi-Fi, sound, graphics, and other hardware work properly.

Linux Mint or Ubuntu would be good starting points. They are beginner-friendly, have familiar desktop layouts, and there is plenty of documentation and troubleshooting help available. They should work well for web browsing, documents, spreadsheets, and other ordinary tasks, though Linux will still feel a little different from Windows at first.

BlueMango41: If the laptop is especially old, choose the XFCE edition of Mint instead of the Cinnamon edition. It uses fewer resources and should feel more responsive.

Zorin OS is another approachable option. Its desktop can be configured to look more like Windows or macOS, which may make the transition easier for someone who has never used Linux.

Fedora with the KDE desktop is a polished and up-to-date choice with a full-featured interface. Mint is probably the simpler recommendation for a very old laptop, while Fedora KDE may be better if the hardware is reasonably capable and you want newer software.
