I found an older but still working PC with a 3rd-generation Intel i3, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB mechanical hard drive. Windows 10 ran extremely slowly, so I'm considering Linux instead. Which beginner-friendly distribution and desktop environment would be a good fit for this hardware?

Linux Mint XFCE is probably the easiest recommendation. It has a familiar desktop layout, good hardware support, and should feel much lighter than Windows 10. Xubuntu or Lubuntu would also be reasonable choices if you want something similarly lightweight.

MX Linux with XFCE is a stable, customizable option that should run comfortably on those specifications. If you want something especially lightweight with a traditional Windows-like interface, Q4OS with Trinity or antiX are worth considering.

Before formatting the drive, back up any important files. For a simple starting point, I’d try Mint XFCE or Xubuntu first; both are approachable for someone new to Linux and should be much more comfortable than Windows 10 on this machine.

The hard drive may be a bigger bottleneck than the processor or RAM. Even an inexpensive SATA SSD would make booting and opening applications dramatically faster. The computer should still work with the original drive, but don’t expect miracles from any distribution on a slow mechanical disk.

An SSD would definitely help, although replacing the drive may not be worth the expense if the goal is simply to keep this old computer usable.
