I have a Dell Latitude E3450 from 2015 that has become sluggish with Windows 10 and modern applications. I'd like to install Linux and would appreciate recommendations for a beginner-friendly distribution that should run comfortably on this hardware. The laptop has an Intel Core i5-5200U processor, 4 GB of DDR3-1600 RAM, a 128 GB SSD, and integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500. I'll mainly use it for web browsing, streaming, and everyday documents.

The desktop environment matters more than the distribution itself. Debian, Mint, Ubuntu, or Fedora paired with XFCE or LXQt should work well. Lubuntu is also worth considering because it uses LXQt and is designed for modest hardware. The SSD will make a noticeable difference.

Before choosing, check whether the Windows applications you rely on have Linux versions or suitable alternatives. For a simple first installation, Iโ€™d choose Mint XFCE or Debian with XFCE, then see whether the performance meets your needs.

Linux Mint with XFCE would be a very safe starting point. Itโ€™s beginner-friendly, well supported, and the lighter desktop should keep memory use reasonable. Mint MATE is another good option if you prefer its layout.

MX Linux is a solid choice for older laptops, and antiX is an even lighter alternative if you want to minimize resource usage. Emmabuntรผs is another beginner-friendly option that lets you choose between XFCE and LXQt.

Four gigabytes of RAM is usable for browsing, streaming, and documents, but modern browsers can consume it quickly. A lightweight desktop and a swap file will help, though adding another 4 GB would improve multitasking considerably. This model supports up to 16 GB, but youโ€™ll need compatible DDR3L memory, likely purchased secondhand.
