Which Linux distribution would work best for my PC, 3D printing, and schoolwork?

I have a PC currently running Windows 10 with 16 GB of RAM, an Nvidia GTX 1660, and an AMD processor. I also use Linux Mint on an older MacBook Air and have had a good experience with it. I'm considering switching this PC to Linux because I suspect Windows may have malware and Windows 10 is no longer supported. My main uses are schoolwork, Elegoo 3D-printer slicing software, and occasional War Thunder, since I do most of my gaming on a PS5. Which Linux distribution would you recommend, and what should I check before installing so I don't lose my files or run into software compatibility problems?

Your Nvidia GTX 1660 should work on Linux with the proprietary Nvidia driver, which Mint and Ubuntu-based distributions make fairly easy to install. War Thunder may run through Steam’s compatibility tools, but check the current game status and test it before wiping Windows. You could also keep a small Windows partition or second drive temporarily if you need a fallback.

Back up your important files to an external drive before changing anything. Don’t rely on the installer to protect your data, especially if you suspect the Windows installation is infected. You should also make a list of the applications you use for school and check each one for a Linux version or a suitable alternative.

If you want the least disruption, start with Mint rather than jumping to a gaming-focused distribution. Since you mainly game on a console, the extra gaming features of options like Bazzite or CachyOS probably aren’t necessary. Also, the usual term is “distribution” or “distro”; “version” generally refers to a release of that distribution.

Linux Mint would be a sensible choice since you already know how to use it. Ubuntu, Fedora, or an Ubuntu-based option such as Xubuntu would also work. The main differences between distributions are update schedules, default desktop environments, and how much configuration is needed—not usually whether a particular Linux application can run. Try the distribution from a live USB first to check your graphics, Wi-Fi, and general hardware response.

Elegoo’s slicer software has Linux options, and common alternatives such as Cura, PrusaSlicer, and OrcaSlicer support Linux as well. Check the exact software and printer model you use before installing, but 3D-printing itself shouldn’t prevent you from switching.
