I'm thinking about switching from Windows 11 to Linux and would appreciate some guidance on choosing a distribution. My laptop has a Ryzen 7 4800H, an NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, and two 500 GB NVMe SSDs. I mainly play Steam and itch.io indie games, along with Final Fantasy XIV. I've found plenty of conflicting advice and would prefer something beginner-friendly with reliable NVIDIA driver support and good gaming compatibility. What would you recommend, and are there any setup or dual-boot tips I should know?

Debian can be very stable and light on resources, but it may require more manual setup for newer kernels, NVIDIA drivers, and gaming software. You could use a lightweight desktop, although your laptop has enough RAM and CPU power that you don’t need to choose an especially minimal setup. Before installing, back up important files and consider testing the distribution in live mode or installing it on the second SSD.
Linux Mint is probably the easiest starting point for this hardware. Its Driver Manager can help install the proprietary NVIDIA driver, and you can use a newer kernel if needed. Ubuntu is another beginner-friendly option because its installer can offer the NVIDIA driver during setup. Either should work well with Steam and Proton, though it’s worth checking Final Fantasy XIV’s current Linux compatibility before committing.
Thanks! The command-line setup on Fedora sounded a little intimidating since this would be my first Linux install. I’m hoping to get the most out of this laptop before replacing it, so an easier driver setup is definitely appealing.
Fedora KDE is a solid choice if you want a modern desktop and newer software. It runs well on gaming hardware, but NVIDIA setup usually takes a few extra steps and updates can occasionally require troubleshooting. For a first switch from Windows, I’d test it from a USB drive first or use Mint if you want a more conservative experience.

When people say a lightweight WM or desktop, do they mean something like XFCE instead of KDE or Cinnamon?
