Which Linux distribution would work well on my 8-year-old laptop?

I have an older Samsung Essentials E30 with a 7th-generation Intel Core i3-7020U, 4 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB NVMe SSD replacing the original hard drive. My main PC already runs Windows 11, but after updating this laptop I found Windows 11 too heavy and bloated. I have never used Linux before and would appreciate advice on a beginner-friendly option. I mainly want to watch study videos and movies, use it alongside my Samsung tablet, and occasionally play lightweight games or use emulators. Suggestions for a suitable distribution and basic setup tips would be very helpful.

Fedora with KDE should also run reasonably well, especially with the SSD. Fedora receives newer software and can be a good fit if lightweight gaming is important, although it may require a little more setup than Mint. Xfce is lighter, while KDE offers more features and a more modern interface.

For the easiest transition from Windows, I would start with Linux Mint Xfce or MX Linux Xfce. Make a bootable USB, try the live environment first to check Wi-Fi, sound, video playback, and suspend behavior, then install it if everything works. With 4 GB of RAM, avoid opening too many browser tabs at once.

Linux Mint with the Xfce desktop would be a comfortable choice for a first-time Linux user. It is fairly lightweight, familiar to Windows users, and should handle browsing, videos, office work, and basic emulation well on that hardware.

MX Linux using Xfce is another good option for older hardware. Xfce keeps memory usage low while still providing a complete desktop, and MX generally includes helpful tools for new users. Enabling zram can also make the system feel smoother with only 4 GB of RAM.
