Which motherboard makes more sense for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 5080 build?

I'm putting together a PC with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 5080, and I can choose between the MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk MAX WiFi and MSI X870E Gaming Plus WiFi at no extra cost. I'm also considering the Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite and ASUS TUF Gaming B850-Plus. I probably won't need USB4, and I'm not planning anything extreme with overclocking. The Tomahawk seems to be rated highly, but I'm unsure which board offers the best overall features and appearance. If the Gigabyte board is the X3D or Turbo version, does its Turbo feature make a meaningful difference?

All four boards should run a 9800X3D without trouble, so VRM capacity shouldn’t be the deciding factor. The Tomahawk has particularly strong power delivery, but it is already more than sufficient for this CPU. The X870E Gaming Plus gives you USB4, while the Tomahawk offers two Gen 5 M.2 slots plus another slot with shared limitations. If you don’t need either board’s extra features, choose based on layout, rear I/O, BIOS preferences, and looks.

If you can’t identify a specific reason to need the X870E chipset, the B850 boards are probably the better choice. The main advantages of the X870E option are USB4 and additional PCIe connectivity, but USB4 also uses some PCIe lanes. For one or two NVMe drives and a normal gaming build, B850 should be more than enough.

That makes sense. I’m not planning to use USB4, so I’m mainly comparing features, cooling, and appearance now.

Since the prices are identical, the Gigabyte Aorus Elite could be worth choosing if you prefer its design and the exact model includes the Turbo feature you want. However, don’t assume Turbo mode provides a major gaming improvement—it generally changes preset power or boost behavior and may increase heat and power use. Confirm the precise model and specifications first, because the WiFi 7 and X3D variants can differ. For a stock or lightly tuned 9800X3D, the performance difference between these boards should be negligible.

The TUF and Tomahawk have beefier power stages than some versions of the Gigabyte and X870E boards, but at stock settings the practical difference is tiny. None of these boards should be stressed by a 9800X3D.
