The main practical difference appears to be how the PCIe lanes are allocated. On the ASUS X870 board, some lanes are used for a high-speed 40Gbps USB-C connection, while the MSI B850 board uses them for an additional CPU-connected NVMe slot. Choose the ASUS if that fast USB-C bandwidth is important; choose the MSI if you would rather have extra high-speed M.2 storage.

For a gaming build with one graphics card and one or two SSDs, either board should be more than capable, so compare the exact rear I/O, storage layout, wireless features, and warranty before deciding.

If you’re also choosing an MSI graphics card, the MSI board could make sense for a coordinated look, especially with a white-themed build. That said, aesthetics shouldn’t outweigh the actual connectivity and storage features unless the two boards are otherwise equal.

For the memory, DDR5-6000 CL30 is generally the sweet spot for an AM5 gaming system. Assuming the kits have similar speeds and timings beyond that, CL30 will have lower latency than CL38.
