Which Part of My PC Build Did I Overspend On?

I'm putting together a gaming PC and want to know whether any single component is unnecessarily expensive or whether the overall build is unbalanced. I intentionally chose a higher-quality power supply because I want the system to last several years, and I'm also considering overclocking, boosting, and undervolting the processor. The build includes a Ryzen 5 9600X, a Radeon RX 9070 GRE, an AIO cooler, DDR5 memory, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. My monitor is a 27-inch display that supports 4K at 144Hz and 1080p at 288Hz, which I purchased for about $249. My main goal is playing Minecraft with shaders at 4K, ideally above 45 FPS; I'm not specifically trying to maintain 144 FPS at 4K. Which parts seem overpriced, and does anything need to be changed for better value or balance?

The GPU and monitor combination depends on your expectations. A 9070 GRE—or even a regular RX 9070—may not deliver 4K at 144 FPS consistently, but that does not matter if your actual target is Minecraft with shaders above 45 FPS. The graphics card is also more than you need for ordinary 1080p gaming, so a 1440p monitor would be the more conventional pairing. Since you found the 4K display for $249 and plan to keep it for a future upgrade, keeping it is perfectly reasonable.

I’m not chasing 144 FPS at 4K. I mainly want Minecraft with shaders to run smoothly, and 4K is a useful long-term feature. I’m upgrading from a very slow laptop, so anything above roughly 45 FPS will already be a huge improvement.

The clearest place to save money is the AIO cooler. Unless you specifically want the appearance, lower noise, or need the radiator for a compact case, a good air cooler such as a Thermalright Peerless Assassin-class model should handle this CPU for far less money. That could save roughly $75–$100 without meaningfully hurting normal performance. A stronger cooler may still make sense if you are committed to aggressive overclocking or want flexibility for a hotter future CPU, but it is not automatically required just because the processor can boost.

I’m planning to push the CPU toward 5.8 GHz if the chip allows it, while also boosting and undervolting. I’d rather keep stronger cooling available for a future upgrade, even if it costs more now.

The motherboard may also be more expensive than necessary, so there could be another $40 or so to save there. However, the biggest concern is making sure the memory price is correct. If the kit really costs around $400, that is dramatically overpriced for 32GB of DDR5 and is the first thing I would replace. A normal 2x16GB DDR5-6000 kit should generally cost much less. Also check the SSD price, since a budget 1TB drive at a high price may not be good value.

There are bundle deals that combine a newer processor, motherboard, and memory for only a little more than your current parts, so it is worth comparing those before buying. Just be careful with bundles using 2x8GB memory. Starting with two 8GB sticks leaves only two slots for expansion, and four-stick DDR5 configurations can be harder to run stably. A 2x16GB kit is the better starting point for this platform, especially if you want the system to last several years.

That bundle is attractive, but I don’t want to start with only 16GB or depend on filling all four memory slots later. I’d rather have a proper 2x16GB kit, even if it costs more.
