Which Registrar Should I Use to Transfer My .io Domain in the UK?

I'm considering moving a .io domain away from GoDaddy after being quoted about £66 for the annual renewal. GoDaddy has worked reliably for me for more than 20 years, and I only use it for domain registration while hosting is handled elsewhere, but the price is much higher than the roughly £10 I pay for my other domains. This domain is mainly used for private email routing, so I also care about privacy features and reliable DNS management. I'm based in the UK, though US-based registrars are fine if currency-conversion costs don't cancel out the savings. I've seen plenty of registrar comparison lists, but I'd prefer recommendations from people who have actually used these services. Which registrars offer reasonable .io renewal prices and dependable service?

Cloudflare would be my first choice. Their pricing and domain management are generally straightforward, though you should check the exact renewal cost for each TLD before transferring.

I recently moved several domains from Namecheap to Porkbun because the renewal prices were better and the API gives more control, including DNS-01 challenges for Let’s Encrypt. One important setup detail: copying your DNS records isn’t enough. You also need to enable Porkbun’s DNS service or switch to their nameservers, otherwise the records won’t actually be served.

I’ve had a good experience with Porkbun, and their .io renewals are considerably less than £66—around £40 in my case. They’re US-based, but card payments and currency conversion have worked smoothly, and the total has still been cheaper.

Rocket Domains is a UK-based option. They also include secure premium global DNS at no extra cost with their domains, which could be useful if reliable DNS and avoiding US currency conversion are priorities.
