I'm shopping for a wireless mouse that can handle heavy everyday scrolling while still being suitable for gaming. My Logitech G305 has started developing scroll-wheel problems after long-term use, so wheel reliability is now a major priority.

I'm comparing mice with optical scroll encoders against magnetic or electromagnetic designs such as Logitech's MagSpeed. For people who have used both, which type has been more dependable over several years? Does an optical encoder actually reduce skipping or reverse scrolling, or is a magnetic wheel's main benefit its feel and free-spin mode? Are there any good wireless options under €100 where scroll-wheel longevity is the main consideration?

Some people use the same mouse for a decade without wearing out the wheel, while others develop skipping or reverse scrolling much sooner. Heavy scrolling, dust, and the specific encoder design all matter. If precise scrolling is important, try the wheel in person if possible rather than choosing solely based on whether it is optical or magnetic.

Magnetic wheels such as MagSpeed are mainly attractive because of their feel, switching between ratcheted and free-spin modes, and quiet operation. That doesn’t automatically prove they will outlast every optical encoder. Optical designs avoid some mechanical contact issues, but the rest of the wheel assembly can still fail, so the implementation matters.

The best choice is probably the mouse that fits your hand and has a wheel you find precise. A supposedly superior wheel doesn’t help much if the shape is uncomfortable or you dislike using the mouse. There isn’t enough here to say that one technology guarantees years of trouble-free use.
