Which SteamOS-Like Linux Distribution Can I Install on Its Own Partition?

I like trying different Linux distributions, but when I attempted to install SteamOS, the installer wanted to format my entire drive. I canceled because I need to preserve my existing data and install the system on a separate partition. While researching, I found several gaming-focused distributions that seem inspired by SteamOS, but I'm not sure how they differ or which one would be the best choice. I'd appreciate recommendations for something with a SteamOS-like experience that can be installed without wiping the whole disk.

SteamOS itself is based on Arch Linux, but there isn’t really one official SteamOS derivative. If you want a more traditional desktop installation, Arch with KDE Plasma would be the closest general-purpose setup, although it requires more manual configuration than SteamOS.

CachyOS is another reasonable option. It’s Arch-based and provides gaming-oriented tweaks while being easier to install than a completely manual Arch setup. Nobara and other Fedora-based gaming distributions are also worth considering, but they aren’t immutable in exactly the same way as SteamOS.

Bazzite is probably the closest match if you want a SteamOS-style gaming system. It’s built on Fedora Atomic and focuses on gaming features, controller support, and a console-like experience. Just make sure to read its installation guide carefully so you select the correct partition and don’t overwrite your existing drive.

A lot of these projects are based on the idea of SteamOS rather than directly being based on SteamOS. Bazzite uses Fedora Atomic, while CachyOS uses Arch. Decide whether you want an immutable, console-like system or a regular desktop installation, then check the installer’s partitioning options before proceeding.
