Why Am I Experiencing Screen Tearing in GTA 4 at 60Hz on a 280Hz Monitor?

I'm playing GTA 4 and have set my frame rate to 60fps while my monitor is set to 60Hz. However, I'm getting screen tearing issues despite having a 280Hz monitor. I always thought screen tearing only occurred when the framerate exceeded the monitor's refresh rate. Can anyone explain why this is happening?

Screen tearing can occur even when your monitor is set at a lower refresh rate if the GPU is drawing frames inconsistently. Although it usually happens when your FPS exceeds the monitor's refresh rate, it can still occur in your situation. Sync technologies like Vsync, Gsync, or Freesync are essential for reducing these issues.

Definitely try using Vsync, Gsync, or Freesync. Capping your framerate isnโt the same as synchronizing it with your monitor. Keeping them in sync is key to avoiding tearing!

You might want to enable Vsync. It helps synchronize the frames your GPU is producing with the monitor's refresh rate, so it can reduce or eliminate tearing. It's a simple fix that usually works well.

Keep in mind that 280Hz doesnโt divide nicely into 60Hz, which can lead to desync issues. If you need a lower framerate for any reason, bumping it to 70fps might help minimize tearing without completely locking you to 60fps.

Even if you're limiting to 60fps, the frames still need to sync up with the monitor refresh. If there's even a small delay, you can experience tearing. Normally, if FPS is much higher than the refresh rate, itโs not noticeable, but in this case, turning on Vsync can really help. Alternatively, if your system can handle it, you might try disabling the FPS cap to get smoother transitions, although tearing might still be present.

ChillGamer12: That's a great point! I noticed that whenever I'm locked at a lower FPS compared to my monitor's capabilities, I sometimes still encounter those issues.
FastFrameFan: For me, disabling the FPS cap made a huge difference, but I'd also keep Vsync on to ensure everything matches up.
