I'm noticing some strange fluctuations in internet speed test results between my iPhone and laptop at different times of the day. This morning, my phone was performing about three times faster than my laptop when tested on the same server and app. However, by night, it was the opposite, with my laptop coming in three times faster than my phone. Both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and are just a foot apart. What could cause such varying results at different times?

The brand and model of your Wi-Fi router, your phone’s model, and the Wi-Fi card in your laptop matter a lot too. Wi-Fi performance can really vary due to the surrounding radio environment, including interference from nearby devices, antenna orientation, and even slight physical changes in location. Wi-Fi is convenient, but not always high performance.
It might just be the network traffic that's varying throughout the day. During peak hours, you could see slower speeds on one device compared to the other because of how many people are online at the same time.
Does this inconsistency impact your actual internet usage?
Not too much usually, but I’m mainly keeping an eye out since my plan promises higher speeds than what I seem to be getting, even taking the Wi-Fi slowdown into account. I may need to test with a wired connection to be sure.
Have you considered Smart Steering? That can sometimes cause devices to switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, which affects speeds differently for each device.
Thanks! That actually seems like a good possibility.

I get what you mean. It just surprised me that different hardware showed such different speeds at different times.
