Why are my Windows 11 audio settings disabled, and why is my volume output capped?

I'm dealing with two separate audio problems on my Windows 11 PC. First, several sound options in System Settings are greyed out. Windows also shows a notice saying it needs to be activated, so I'm wondering whether that could be responsible, although other troubleshooting suggestions have pointed toward Realtek or other audio-driver issues instead. I've checked Device Manager several times, uninstalled and reinstalled the audio driver, and installed the newest driver available from ASUS, but nothing has changed. Second, after connecting my PS5 controller to the PC over USB, the audio suddenly became much quieter even though Windows and every software volume control still show 100%. Music played at maximum volume only reaches roughly half of the expected level. What could be causing either issue?

The Windows activation notice is very unlikely to be related to your audio controls. Since Device Manager isn’t showing warnings and reinstalling the ASUS driver didn’t help, check which playback device is actually selected and whether its volume is being limited in the app volume mixer. Connecting the controller may have caused Windows to switch the output device or change its per-device volume.

I’ve checked the drivers repeatedly and tried reinstalling them, but I’ll go through the selected playback device and per-app mixer settings again to see whether the controller created or switched to another audio output.

Open the volume mixer and inspect both the application volume and the output device volume. Also check the sound device’s Properties and any enhancements, loudness normalization, communications settings, or vendor control-panel limits. The important detail is the source of the audio and which physical device is producing it, because the 100% shown in an application may not represent the actual hardware output level.
