Why are Windows 11 machines suddenly using 100GB or more in C:Windows?

Windows 11 disk usage has become a recurring problem across several machines. In the past couple of weeks, some users' C:Windows folders have grown to 100GB or more. A few systems appear to be accumulating temporary files, while others look like update-related growth that standard cleanup tools aren't removing. Has anyone run into this recently, and what's the safest way to identify and reclaim the space?

Start by using a disk-usage tool such as WinDirStat, WizTree, or TreeSize Free to see exactly which folder is growing. Once you know whether the space is in the component store, Installer cache, Windows.old, logs, or temp files, you can choose the appropriate cleanup method instead of deleting things blindly.

Agreed. The exact folder matters more than the total size of C:Windows, and the same tool is useful for confirming whether the cleanup actually worked.

Since several machines are affected at the same time, compare their update histories and folder timestamps. If the growth lines up with one patch, investigate Windows.old, the component store, update logs, and servicing data before removing anything. A common update-related directory shouldn’t be deleted manually without verifying what it contains.

The driver store can also become unexpectedly large, especially on older or heavily managed systems. Remove only superseded drivers using supported Windows tools or carefully reviewed PowerShell commands; don’t delete driver files directly, since that can break device support or future updates.

If these machines have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, check that first. There have been cases where its update process leaves oversized installer data in the Windows Installer cache. Uninstalling and reinstalling Reader fixed the issue on some systems and recovered a significant amount of space.

That’s a useful lead. I’ll test it on one of the affected machines and compare the folder size before and after.
