Why can a low-power muscle stimulator cause such strong contractions?

I use a shoulder-mounted SKG neck stimulator at my desk. It has contact pads and no spinning controls. On higher settings, one of my trapezius muscles visibly twitches even though I am not moving it voluntarily.

What confuses me is how intense it feels despite the device using far less power than nearby equipment such as a phone charger, monitor, or desk lamp. Those devices do not normally shock me if I touch them, while this small device is specifically able to make a muscle contract.

Is the effect mainly caused by the pulse shape and timing rather than the total amount of current? How much do skin resistance, electrode placement, and contact quality matter? I have also noticed that the same setting can feel stronger on some days than others.

It is not simply a question of how many watts the device uses. The stimulator produces carefully timed voltage and current pulses between its two electrodes, and those pulses can depolarize nearby motor nerves. Once a nerve is triggered, the muscle contracts, so a small amount of electrical energy can create a very noticeable twitch.

The pads also make much better electrical contact than accidentally touching an insulated appliance. Their size, position, pressure, and the condition of your skin all affect the circuit. Moist or slightly sweaty skin generally lowers contact resistance, while dry skin can make the sensation sharper or less consistent. That is why the same dial setting may feel different from day to day.

The comparison with a lamp or charger is mostly about design and electrical path, not just their power rating. Those appliances are insulated and are not intended to put current through your body. A muscle stimulator deliberately places electrodes on the skin and sends current through a selected region, with a waveform chosen to stimulate nerves.

Also, a device's maximum power draw does not tell you how much current passes through a particular part of your body. Skin resistance, contact area, moisture, and the path between the electrodes matter a lot. Never treat a mains-powered appliance as safe to touch just because it usually does not shock you; a fault, wet skin, or a different current path can be dangerous.

The changing sensation can come from electrode placement as well as skin moisture. Moving a pad by even a small amount can put it closer to a superficial nerve or change how much of the current crosses the muscle. Sweat, lotions, temperature, pressure, and whether the pads are sitting flat can all change the impedance.

A visible contraction means the stimulation is reaching motor nerves, which is what the product is designed to do. Follow the manufacturer's placement and duration limits, and stop if there is pain, burning, numbness, persistent twitching, dizziness, or an unusual heartbeat. Electrical stimulation around the neck and upper chest deserves extra caution, especially with a pacemaker or implanted device, seizure history, pregnancy, or other medical concerns.
