I recently completed a five-round interview loop for an L5 Technical Account Manager position. My recruiter said the debrief would happen today, and I might hear the decision afterward. Instead, I received an email asking me to schedule a 30-minute recruiter call. Shortly after booking it, I also received an automated rejection saying I would not be moving forward.
I have about two years of consulting experience and limited technical experience related to the role, so I knew the L5 position would be a stretch. Still, it was disappointing to make it through the full loop and then be rejected.
When I asked what the call would cover, the recruiter explained that the team had decided not to proceed with the TAM role and that they would share some feedback. More importantly, they want to discuss other openings that could better match my background and interests.
What should I expect from this call? Is it normal for a recruiter to discuss other roles after a loop rejection? I had heard that candidates can sometimes be restricted from applying to other positions after failing an interview loop, so I'm wondering whether this call is a genuine opportunity or simply a standard rejection follow-up.

This does happen. I had a similar experience where the recruiter delivered the rejection but also mentioned other positions that might be a better fit. In my case, I decided not to pursue them because I only wanted the original role, but if you’re still interested in working there, you should take the conversation seriously.
Ask directly which roles they have in mind, what level they would consider you for, and whether your interview feedback can be shared with those teams. Also ask whether you’re eligible to apply to other openings right away.
Keep your expectations realistic. Sometimes these calls lead to a genuine referral, but sometimes the recruiter only suggests lower-level roles or gives broad feedback such as needing deeper examples or more technical detail. Either way, there’s little downside to taking the call and asking for specifics.
A rejection from one loop doesn’t automatically mean you’re blocked from every other role. Any restriction usually depends on the interview outcome and company policy, so ask the recruiter directly rather than relying on what you’ve heard.
The recruiter’s explanation is probably pretty accurate. It sounds like you may have done well on the leadership and behavioral side but didn’t demonstrate enough technical depth for this particular L5 TAM role. If there had been serious concerns about your overall fit or judgment, they probably wouldn’t be spending time looking for another position for you.
Go into the call ready to hear constructive feedback, then ask what types of roles they think match your experience. It sounds like they may be trying to recycle your candidacy into a role where your strengths fit better.

That was my read too. They may have liked the way you approached problems and worked with people, but felt the technical bar for this position was too high. Being considered for another role generally means the rejection was specific to this job, not a blanket rejection.
