I downloaded a game update that was around 10 GB in size. Before starting, my computer showed 19 GB of free space, but afterward it showed 27 GB available. I'm worried that something unusual happened or that files were deleted without my permission. How can an update require a large download but leave me with more free storage afterward?

That can happen with game updates. The download size is not always the same as the amount of space the finished update uses. The installer may replace larger old files, remove files that are no longer needed, or reorganize and compress the game data. In this case, the update may have downloaded about 10 GB but removed or replaced more than that, resulting in a net gain of free space.
