Why did my free storage increase after downloading a large game update?

I downloaded a game update that was supposed to be about 10 GB. Before starting, my computer showed 19 GB of free space, but afterward it showed 27 GB. I expected the update to use more storage, so I'm worried that something unusual happened or that files were deleted without my permission. What could explain the increase in available space?

That can happen with application updates. The download size isn’t always the same as the amount of space the finished update uses. The installer may replace older, larger files, remove obsolete data, or reorganize the game, so a 10 GB download could ultimately free up storage overall.
