Why Did My Phone’s Storage Jump from 800 MB to 20 GB?

I've been monitoring my storage for the last three months on my Pixel phone, and I usually have between 500 MB to 800 MB left. However, I recently noticed an unusual increase to 20 GB of free storage, and I'm not sure how this happened. I haven't deleted any files or restarted my phone, and I regularly clear cache. Can anyone explain why my storage suddenly increased like this?

Make sure to check your Google Photos or Google Drive just in case your media is set to back up in a compressed format. Sometimes, cloud services optimize storage by saving lower-quality copies, which frees up local space. But if you confirmed there's no backup, then it likely was just a system cleanup.

Yeah, I checked that already, and there are no backups. I guess it's just one of those mysteries!

It's possible that a temporary file or cache was automatically cleared, which can happen during updates or system maintenance. Sometimes, apps remove old data without you noticing. So even if you haven't done anything yourself, the system might have freed up space for you without a lot of fanfare!

That's interesting! I really doubt I did anything myself, though. I guess it could be the system acting up.
