Why Did My Post Get Buried by Downvotes So Quickly?

My previous post started receiving downvotes almost immediately, before it had much time to reach people, and I didn't get any useful feedback explaining why. It now seems unlikely that many more people will see it. This follow-up post also received rapid downvotes, which makes me wonder whether bots or coordinated voting are involvedโ€”or whether the presentation of the original post made people reject it without reading. What might have caused that reaction?

A lot of readers are currently quick to downvote anything that has even a slight AI-generated feel. Polished marketing-style wording, bold subtitles, or a vague product screenshot can trigger that reaction, even when the code and project are entirely original. That may explain some of the response, but it still doesnโ€™t prove that bots were involved.

MellowCactus42: Thereโ€™s no AI in the code or the post. It does seem like people may have made that assumption without looking closely, though.

The post may simply have needed a clearer opening. Explain in one sentence what the tool does, who it helps, and what it offers that existing browser or auditing tools donโ€™t. If readers have to study a screenshot to figure that out, many will move on or assume itโ€™s just promotion.

Complaining about downvotes can sometimes attract even more negative reactions, regardless of whether the original voting was fair. Itโ€™s usually more productive to ask for specific feedback about the projectโ€™s presentation than to lead with the voting pattern. A very low early score can happen through normal small-sample voting, too, so the timing alone isnโ€™t enough to establish manipulation.

It may not be vote manipulation. The post could come across as self-promotion, especially because it was presenting a personal project. The bold section headings also made some readers think it was AI-written, and the screenshot didnโ€™t immediately explain what the tool does or why it improves on existing performance tools. Even if the project is legitimate, people may have skipped it because the value wasnโ€™t obvious at a glance.

MellowCactus42: Thatโ€™s fair. Project showcase posts are naturally promotional, but I can see how the formatting and screenshot might have made the purpose unclear. The tool wasnโ€™t made with AI, though, and I was surprised that people seemed to downvote it before even watching the linked demo.
