Why Did My Victus 16 Fan Start Rattling After a Technician Serviced It?

I took my nearly two-year-old HP Victus 16 to a computer technician, and the fan started making a noticeable rattling or scraping sound after I got it back. It sounds as if something is lightly touching the blades, and it's loud enough to hear from another room. The fan never made this noise before the repair. Could a cable, debris, or damaged fan blade be causing it, and is it likely that the technician caused the problem? The technician will be away for a week, so I'm deciding whether to inspect the laptop myself or take it to someone else.

You can usually inspect the fan by removing the laptop’s bottom panel, but avoid removing the heatsink or disturbing the thermal paste. Check for a loose cable, a broken piece of plastic, dust, or a damaged fan blade. If nothing is obvious, have another technician diagnose it rather than forcing the fan or continuing to use the laptop if it gets hot.

A cable or piece of debris touching the fan blades would be my first guess, especially since the noise appeared after the laptop was serviced. If you’re comfortable doing so, remove only the bottom cover and inspect the fan area without turning anything while the cover is off. You may be able to see a loose cable or debris immediately.

Fan bearings can start failing after a couple of years, so it could be coincidence, but the timing makes it reasonable to question the repair. A damaged blade or a cable that was moved during servicing could create exactly this kind of sound. Record the noise and take photos before opening anything, in case you need to show the technician what changed.

SilverMango14: I was considering opening it myself because the original technician won’t be available when I leave town. I’ll limit the inspection to the cover and fan area and avoid touching the cooling assembly.
