My grandmother's phone placed an outgoing call to one of my grandfather's friends at around 3 a.m. while both of them were asleep. The number isn't saved in her contacts, she doesn't know it from memory, and she hadn't intentionally called this person recently. The call appears in her outgoing call history. We've had phones make accidental calls before, but this one seemed impossible at first. What could have caused it?

Also make sure the phone and its charging accessories aren’t being accessed by another paired device, such as a smartwatch, tablet, or car system. If this happens again, review the exact time, connected devices, and app permissions. If anyone in the room has unexplained headaches, dizziness, or confusion, check the carbon-monoxide detector as a separate safety precaution.
Since the number was previously in the call history, an accidental touch is probably the simplest explanation. If the phone was unlocked, movement in bed could have opened the recent-calls list and tapped the old entry. Try keeping it locked, placing it face-up away from the bed, and disabling voice controls temporarily.
Check the recent call history, connected Bluetooth devices, and which apps have permission to make calls. A voice assistant or another paired device could potentially trigger a call. It’s also worth checking whether the phone was unlocked or pressed against something during the night.
I checked and found that the number was actually in her call history from months ago. It would be strange if she somehow opened the phone and scrolled back to it in her sleep, but accidental screen taps or a voice-assistant trigger now seem more plausible.
