Why Do All My Graphics Cards Have Coil Whine?

Is coil whine basically unavoidable with modern graphics cards? I've owned more than six GPUs from both NVIDIA and AMD, including models from PNY, Sapphire, ASUS, Gigabyte, Zotac, and others, and every one has produced some level of buzzing or whining.

It's audible not only under heavy gaming loads but sometimes while scrolling in Chrome. Minecraft is especially noticeable because the pitch changes when I look up, down, or turn around. I've also tried several cases, motherboards, and power supplies, including Corsair, NZXT, and SilverStone units, without seeing any improvement.

My monitor currently runs at 160 Hz, and I've tried lowering refresh rates and limiting frame rates, but the noise is still there. Is this just a combination of my electrical environment and hardware, or should it be possible to find a graphics card that is genuinely quiet? Would a UPS or power filter help, or are undervolting and FPS limits the only realistic solutions?

The power coming from the building could be worth investigating, particularly since you notice the issue across many different cards and power supplies. A quality UPS with voltage regulation or filtering might help if the mains supply is unusually noisy, but it isn’t a guaranteed cure and basic surge protectors generally won’t change coil whine. If possible, testing the PC in another building would be more informative than continuing to replace components.

I’m renting a small apartment and can’t easily test another room or move elsewhere right now, so a UPS may be the only practical thing I can try.

Coil whine is caused by the interaction between the GPU’s inductors, power delivery, workload, frame rate, and the rest of the system. Swapping parts is unfortunately a bit of a lottery: two identical cards can behave differently, and a card that is quiet in one system can be noisy in another. Capping FPS, enabling a frame limiter, and undervolting are usually the most practical ways to reduce it.

It’s usually most obvious at extremely high frame rates. Try limiting menus and lightweight games to your monitor’s refresh rate, and see whether a slightly lower refresh rate changes the sound. The distance between the PC and your ears also makes a huge difference, especially if you use the system without headphones.

That’s part of what makes this strange for me: I can hear it while scrolling in Chrome, and even older cards that were quiet originally have developed some noise later. Lowering the refresh rate helps a little, but doesn’t eliminate it.

A higher-end model with a more substantial power section may have better odds, but there’s no guarantee. Premium construction can reduce the chance of noticeable whine, yet even expensive cards can produce it. It also isn’t necessarily a sign that the card is defective.

I’m already trying fairly substantial models, including a large factory-overclocked card, so I’m not sure moving to another premium version would guarantee anything.
