Why do browser videos make my OLED look washed out and gray?

Whenever I stream video in a web browser, my OLED display suddenly looks much less vibrant. Blacks turn gray and the screen appears to lose its OLED contrast, although the picture seems to change when an overlay is visible. This only happens with browser streaming; locally played movies in VLC look normal. What could be causing this color shift, and how can I fix it?

The stream may not actually be HDR even though HDR is enabled on the system. In that case, the display can get stuck using the wrong brightness and contrast range. VLC works because it handles local video and HDR output differently. Testing with HDR disabled is a good first step; if that fixes it, you can re-enable HDR only for content and apps that properly support it.

This sounds like an HDR mode problem. The browser or streaming service may be switching HDR on or off incorrectly, which can make the whole image look like it has a gray filter over it. Netflix and some other services are especially prone to this. Try disabling HDR in your display or operating-system settings and see whether browser playback returns to normal.
