Why Do My Internal SATA Hard Drives Occasionally Disappear?

I have two internally mounted 3.5-inch spinning SATA hard drives that occasionally vanish from File Explorer, roughly once a week. Restarting the computer brings them back every time. Since it has happened with different drives, I'm not sure whether the problem is a cable or drive fault. The PC uses a Corsair CV450 450W power supply. Is there an obvious cause, and is there a way to refresh or reconnect the drives without restarting Windows?

Check the drives’ SMART health data with a disk-monitoring utility. Look for warnings, communication errors, or repeated resets. If the drives look healthy, the remaining possibilities include a bad SATA cable, a motherboard SATA controller issue, or unstable power. Also make sure the drives are actually connected internally rather than relying on an underpowered USB enclosure.

Even if different drives are affected, check the shared power path. If both HDDs use connectors from the same daisy-chained SATA power cable, an intermittent contact or connector problem could make multiple drives disappear. Reseat the SATA data and power connections, and try a different power connector if possible. A 450W supply may be enough for this setup, but a failing PSU or unstable power delivery could still cause drives to drop out.

When it happens, check Device Manager under Disk drives. If the disks are still listed but disconnected or inactive, right-click and choose “Scan for hardware changes.” You can also open Disk Management with diskmgmt.msc; sometimes a drive is visible there even when it doesn’t appear in File Explorer. If it’s marked offline, you may be able to bring it back online.

Power-saving settings can sometimes suspend SATA hard drives and fail to wake them correctly. Check the drives’ properties in Device Manager and, if available, disable the option that allows Windows to turn off the device to save power. You can also review Windows power settings for hard-disk sleep or aggressive power management.
