Why Do Only Certain Keys on My Laptop Keyboard Stop Working?

Several keys on my laptop keyboard suddenly stopped responding, while others continue to work normally. The affected keys include Z, X, C, V, B, N, M, L, K, J, H, F, S, I, U, and W. Keys such as G, D, A, P, O, Y, T, R, E, and Q still function. I've already restarted the laptop and updated the keyboard drivers, but nothing changed. I also tested the keyboard in Safe Mode, and the same keys were still unresponsive. Could this be caused by a hardware failure, such as a damaged keyboard cable or circuit, or is there another software-related explanation?

Since the same keys fail even in Safe Mode, a software or driver problem is less likely. The keyboard may have a loose ribbon cable, damaged traces, or a failing keyboard circuit. Connecting an external USB keyboard can help confirm that the laptop itself is working normally.

I tested it in Safe Mode too, but those keys still don’t work, so I’m starting to think it’s a hardware problem.

Laptop keyboards use a row-and-column matrix rather than wiring each key separately. A single broken connection, damaged trace, or poor contact can disable a group of keys while leaving others working. The particular pattern of failed keys can help a technician locate the damaged line, but the keyboard or its connector will probably need inspection or replacement.
