Why do some videos keep loading instead of playing on Linux Mint?

I recently switched to Linux Mint, and most things are working well. However, some videos in my web browser never start and remain stuck loading. Could this be related to missing H.265 or other video codec support, and what should I check to fix it?

Youโ€™re using Linux Mint, so the exact browser and Mint edition may matter. Try updating the system and browser, then test the same video in another browser. If only certain formats fail, itโ€™s likely a codec or browser compatibility issue rather than a general Linux video problem.

Some videos may use H.265/HEVC or another codec that your browser doesnโ€™t support properly. VLC can help test whether your system can decode the file, but installing VLC usually wonโ€™t fix playback inside a web browser. If the videos work in VLC but not the browser, check the browserโ€™s codec support, hardware acceleration settings, and whether the site requires a different browser or media package.

MellowCedar42: Ah, I should have mentioned that the problem is happening in my web browser. Iโ€™m still new to Linuxโ€”could missing codec support still cause that?
