Why do YouTube ads load smoothly even when the connection is extremely slow

I'm staying at a campsite in France where a storm has knocked out the local mobile network. The campsite Wi‑Fi still works, but it's painfully slow—loading a homepage can take around 30 seconds, and the video site itself took more than a minute to open. When I started a video, it initially loaded slowly and used low quality. However, the advertisement before the video began almost immediately, played without buffering, and looked surprisingly sharp. How can the ad stream so reliably when the rest of the connection is struggling?

It’s probably a combination of compression and caching. Ads are short, standardized video files that are often requested by many people, so copies can be stored on nearby CDN or edge servers. That makes them much quicker to retrieve than a less popular video.

The ad is chosen before playback and can start buffering while the page or main video is still loading. Since it may only be 15–30 seconds long, YouTube can download most or all of it in advance. A high-quality short ad can also require less total data than several minutes of the main video, even at low quality.

Popularity makes a big difference. Lots of people in the same area may be receiving the same advertisement, so the local cache is likely already warm. Meanwhile, those users could all be watching different longer videos, which are less likely to be stored nearby. Adaptive streaming then lowers the main video’s quality to match the weak connection.
