Why does a bank PDF fail to download in iPhone Safari?

I'm having a strange issue with Safari on my iPhone. One of my banks provides PDF receipts for transactions, but when I tap the download button, a loading spinner appears briefly and then disappears. No PDF opens, and nothing appears in Safari's downloads. PDFs from other websites work normally, and receipts from another bank download without any trouble. I've already enabled pop-ups and tried requesting the desktop version of the site, but neither helped. The bank's website used to show Safari's download indicator for these receipts, but that stopped about a month ago. What could be causing this, and is there anything I can do to fix it?

Since holding the download button didnโ€™t produce a menu or save the file, this probably isnโ€™t something you can correct with Safari settings. The site may have changed how it creates or delivers receipts, and iPhone Safari may no longer be receiving the file properly. Using the bankโ€™s official app is a practical solution, while reporting that the mobile download indicator disappeared could help the bank identify a website bug.

The bankโ€™s website is probably generating the PDF inside the page instead of linking to a regular file. iPhone Safari handles those generated downloads more strictly than desktop Safari, so the request can fail silently. The fact that the same receipt downloads successfully on a Mac strongly suggests the problem is with the siteโ€™s mobile implementation rather than a setting on your phone. You could try looking for a download arrow in Safariโ€™s address bar, but if that no longer appears, the bank likely needs to fix its website. The official banking app or a computer may be the most reliable workaround.

MellowCedar42: I tried the bankโ€™s official app, and the PDF downloaded successfully there. The Mac version of Safari also works, so it seems to be limited to the bankโ€™s website on iPhone. The app is a good workaround for now, and Iโ€™ll consider reporting the mobile-site issue to the bank.
