Why does enabling XMP make my Ryzen 7600 boot into safe mode?

I built my first PC in June 2025 and left XMP disabled because I didn't want to deal with memory troubleshooting. I recently tried enabling the profile for my Patriot Viper Venom 32 GB (2ร16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 kit, but the BIOS enters safe mode when I set the memory above 5600 MT/s. My system uses a Ryzen 5 7600, an ASUS TUF GAMING B650M-E WIFI motherboard, and an XFX Swift OC Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB. I'm fine with running the RAM below its advertised speed since it was discounted, but I'd like to understand what is limiting it and whether choosing these parts was a mistake. I also wasn't familiar with memory QVL lists when I bought the components. I updated the BIOS to the latest stable version, but the same warning appeared at 5800 MT/s; interestingly, trying 6000 MT/s afterward allowed the system to boot.

The safe-mode message means the motherboard failed to train the memory at the selected settings and reverted so it could boot. QVL lists can help confirm tested combinations, but being absent from the list doesnโt automatically mean the RAM is incompatible. If 6000 boots, test it with a proper memory stress test rather than assuming it is stable; if errors appear, drop back to 5600 or adjust settings conservatively.

The Ryzen 5 7600 officially supports DDR5-5200 with two memory modules, while higher speeds such as 6000 MT/s are considered overclocking through EXPO/XMP. Two-stick DDR5-6000 is commonly achievable on this platform, but it isnโt guaranteed for every CPU, motherboard, and memory kit combination. Your processorโs individual memory controller may simply be less tolerant of settings between 5600 and 6000. A BIOS update is still worth trying, but running at 5600โor testing 6000 if it remains stableโisnโt evidence that you chose bad parts.

MellowPine47: I updated the BIOS and saw the same warning at 5800, but after that I tried the 6000 profile and it booted. Iโll test it for stability and fall back to 5600 if necessary.
