Why does GParted show an I/O error when I try to access my internal NVMe drive?

I'm trying to replace Windows with Puppy Linux on another device. I boot TrixiePup Wayland from a Ventoy USB, and Puppy detects the internal NVMe drive and its partitions, such as nvme0n1p1 and nvme0n1p2. However, when I open GParted, it reports errors like "Error fsyncing/closing /dev/nvme0n1p1: Input/output error" for the partitions. I even reinstalled Windows, but the problem remains. Could Windows' NTFS state, Ventoy, or something else be preventing Puppy from accessing the drive?

Puppy may not work reliably when booted through Ventoy. Try writing the Puppy ISO directly to a USB drive with an imaging tool and booting that USB separately. If the error still occurs, the issue may be with the drive or its partition state rather than the multiboot setup.

If those partitions are NTFS, Windows Fast Startup may be leaving them in a hibernated state instead of fully unmounting them. Disable Fast Startup and perform a true shutdown, or restart into Linux rather than using Windowsโ normal shutdown. Linux may refuse to modify the partitions because doing so could corrupt the filesystem.

If you canโt get Puppy working, antiX is another lightweight Linux distribution worth trying. It may provide better compatibility with your hardware and installation method.

MellowCedar47: I disabled Fast Startup and tried restarting instead of shutting down, but GParted still reports the same input/output errors.
