Why does my ASUS Vivobook restart instead of shutting down?

My ASUS Vivobook 15 is running Windows 11, and it sometimes restarts when I choose Shut down—usually after I've been using it for several hours. If I select Shut down again after that, it powers off normally. What could be causing this, and what steps can I try to fix it?

If Fast Startup isn’t listed, update the laptop’s BIOS, chipset, and Intel Management Engine or other power-management drivers from the official ASUS support page for the exact Vivobook 15 model. Also open Command Prompt as an administrator and run `sfc /scannow` to check for corrupted Windows system files. These steps can help if the restart is caused by a driver or damaged system component.

A common cause is Windows Fast Startup. It partially hibernates the system instead of performing a completely fresh shutdown, and that can occasionally lead to a restart after a long session. Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do. Select “Change settings that are currently unavailable,” turn off “Turn on fast startup,” save the change, and test the laptop again. Shutdown may take slightly longer afterward.
MellowCedar27: I checked that menu, but my laptop only shows options for sleep and lock. I don’t see a Fast Startup setting.

MellowCedar27: I’ll try updating the drivers and running the system-file check. Thanks.
