Why does my CPU clock drop drastically after gaming for a few minutes?

I've been experiencing an issue while gaming where my CPU clock drops from 3000 MHz to as low as 399 MHz after about 5 minutes of gameplay. This causes my GPU to slow down too, leading to frame rates dropping to around 10-20 FPS. After another 5 minutes, everything returns to normal and the cycle continues. My specs are an Intel Core i7, RTX 5050, and 16 GB of RAM. Any suggestions to fix this?

This appears to be overheating. Is your setup a laptop or a desktop PC? If it's a PC, consider changing the thermal paste or looking into your cooler. It might help a lot!

Thanks for the advice! Actually, it's a laptop and I just had the thermal paste reapplied yesterday.

It sounds like your problem might be heat related or maybe related to power supply issues. Have you monitored your CPU and GPU temperatures while gaming? That could give you a clue about what's going on.

I’ve got a similar setup and faced this kind of problem. Just to confirm, have you checked if your laptop is plugged in and the power settings are on High Performance? Sometimes the cooling pads can also make a difference.

This seems like power throttling to protect your hardware. I suggest enabling both CPU and GPU power in MSI Afterburner to monitor the performance. Make sure your laptop is plugged in and set to High Performance mode, too. Also, check if there’s good airflow and that your fans aren’t blocked.
