I'm new to home labs and recently bought a Dell PowerEdge R320. The previous owner said it was working normally, but after installing Ubuntu from a hard drive connected through a USB-to-SATA adapter, I tried adding three internal drives: one new 256 GB drive and two identical used drives from retired work computers. All three work normally when connected to another computer over USB, but each one flashes orange and reports error PDR1001 when installed in the server's drive bays. I've reset the BIOS, iDRAC, and Lifecycle Controller settings, but the problem remains. What should I check to determine whether this is a drive compatibility issue, a RAID controller configuration problem, a faulty backplane, or something else?

Also verify the drive sector format and controller support. Older server controllers can be picky about 4Kn drives and may only support 512-byte or 512e disks. The exact drive models and the installed RAID controller model would help narrow this down.
Since all three drives fail in multiple bays, the common hardware is more suspicious than the disks themselves. Try connecting one drive directly to a motherboard SATA port, if the R320 has an available one. If it works there, the RAID card, backplane, or its cabling is likely the issue. Resetting the firmware settings was a good step, but it does not necessarily repair a failed controller or backplane.
