Why does my headset mic replay my computer audio instead of my voice?

I'm using a headset with a 3.5 mm jack splitter because my PC has separate audio and microphone ports. The headset connects to the splitter, with one plug going into the green audio port and the other into the pink microphone port. When I test the microphone, it plays back whatever audio is coming from the computer, such as music, but it doesn't pick up my voice. What could be causing this?

Make sure the splitter is specifically a headset splitter that separates a combined headphone/microphone plug into two plugs—headphones for the green port and microphone for the pink port. If the plugs are reversed, or if it’s the wrong type of splitter, the microphone input can end up receiving the computer’s playback signal instead of the headset mic. Check that the mic plug is firmly connected to the pink port and that the correct microphone is selected in your computer’s sound settings.

Yes, the headset cable goes into the splitter, then the two plugs go into the green and pink ports. I’ll check whether the splitter is the proper headset type and verify the input selection.
