Why does my HP All-in-One slow down so much during Discord calls and gaming?

I have an HP All-in-One 22-df0xxx with 8 GB of RAM, although Windows shows about 5.92 GB available, and roughly 932 GB of storage with more than half free. I barely have any games installed, so I expected it to run smoothly. However, whenever I join a Discord call while running a game—specifically DeSmuME with Pokémon Black 2—loading becomes extremely slow and the computer gets very loud. What could be causing this, and what can I do to improve its performance?

Find out whether the computer has a traditional hard drive or an SSD. If it uses an older mechanical drive, replacing it with an SSD can make Windows and application loading much faster, although it will not solve a weak CPU. Make sure the vents are clear and check temperatures too—the fans becoming very loud could indicate the system is overheating and reducing its speed. Lowering the emulator resolution or graphics settings may also help.

Free storage space is good, but it does not make a slow hard drive perform like an SSD. The type and health of the drive matter more than how much space is unused.

The biggest limitation is probably the processor rather than your storage capacity or free RAM. This model commonly has a low-end dual-core CPU, and running an emulator plus a voice chat app can push it close to 100% usage. Check Task Manager while the slowdown is happening to see whether CPU, memory, or disk usage is maxed out. Also close unnecessary background programs and disable nonessential startup apps in Windows Settings.
