Why does my new ESD mat smell so bad?

I just received my ESD mat today, and I'm hit with a really strong rubber and plastic smell that's almost unbearable. Is this normal? I wanted to start working on my PC, but the odor is so overwhelming that I had to step out of the room. Will this smell go away, and how long can I expect it to last?

Yeah, it's pretty common for ESD mats to have a strong smell when they're new. That's just the rubber and plastic offgassing, kind of like that new car smell but without the charm. If you can, try putting it outside or in a well-ventilated area to help it air out.

You might want to wash it with a vinegar and water solution, then let it dry outside. That could help reduce the smell, but be aware the offgassing may linger for a bit. My truck’s bed mat took almost a month to lose its smell, so patience is key!

Yeah, offgassing is the real deal. I’d suggest just dealing with it for now; it does eventually diminish.

The smell will fade over time, but it might take a while. You could speed up the process by exposing it to sunlight or some heat, but honestly, it may not completely go away before you want to start building your PC. Just give it some time!
