Why does my NVMe drive disappear from File Explorer until I restart?

I moved a 1 TB NVMe drive from my laptop into my desktop PC. Windows 11 is installed on the NVMe, but I normally boot from the desktop's separate SSD. Recently, the NVMe sometimes appears in Task Manager but not in File Explorer. After I shut down the computer and turn it back on, the drive reappears and works normally, but the problem keeps returning. What could cause this, and how can I diagnose it?

Check whether Windows can see the drive in Disk Management even when it is missing from File Explorer. If it appears there without a drive letter, assign one. If it is shown as offline, bring it online. You can also compare the disk’s partition style—GPT or MBR—in Disk Management’s disk properties. That mismatch is less likely if the drive worked normally for months, but it is still worth checking.

The drive may be starting to fail or intermittently losing its connection. A full shutdown can reset the controller, which would explain why it works again afterward. Back up anything important first, then check the NVMe’s health and error logs with a tool from the drive manufacturer or a utility such as CrystalDiskInfo. Also reseat the drive and make sure its mounting screw is secure.

Since the problem changes after a shutdown, investigate power management and firmware as well. Update the motherboard chipset and NVMe drivers, check for a firmware update for the drive, and try disabling PCIe/NVMe power-saving features temporarily in Windows or the BIOS. If the drive disappears from Disk Management or the BIOS entirely, that points more strongly to a hardware, slot, or drive problem than to a missing drive letter.
