Why does my NVMe SSD disappear from some M.2 slots on my new AM5 build?

I'm assembling my first PC with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, an MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk Gaming WiFi motherboard, and a Crucial P510 1TB PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD. The SSD wasn't detected in the primary M.2 slot, even after reseating it, and it also failed to appear in another slot. After updating the BIOS with M-Flash, the drive was detected in M.2 slot 4, but it disappeared again when moved back to slot 1. A CMOS reset seemed to help temporarily, but the drive later vanished during Windows installation. What should I check to determine whether this is a BIOS, slot-compatibility, lane-sharing, or faulty-drive issue?

Check the motherboard’s BIOS storage settings and confirm that each M.2 slot is enabled. Also look at the manual for lane-sharing rules—some slots can be disabled or change behavior depending on CPU lanes, PCIe settings, or other installed devices. Since the drive disappeared during Windows setup, I’d also update to the newest stable BIOS, load optimized defaults, and test with only the GPU, one RAM kit, and the SSD installed.

Because the drive drops out while Windows is being installed, don’t assume this is only a slot-detection issue. Test the SSD in another computer or with a known-good NVMe drive in the motherboard’s primary slot. If the Crucial drive disappears there too, exchange or warranty it. If another drive works consistently, the P510 is the likely failure; if both drives fail, focus on the motherboard, BIOS, CPU socket contact, or power delivery.

The SSD being detected in slot 4 suggests that the drive can work, but it doesn’t completely rule out a problem. Verify that slot 1 supports the drive’s PCIe generation and that its heatsink is installed correctly without putting pressure on the module. Inspect the contacts and socket for debris or bent pins, and make sure the SSD is fully inserted before securing it flat.

The manufacturer’s compatibility checker says the model isn’t compatible, although it may simply be untested because the drive is relatively new. I’m still trying to understand why it worked in slot 4.
